For the love of dahlias

There’s something magical about a field full of flowers, especially one with almost every colour on the colour wheel!

For one of the most spectacular sites a dahlia lover could dream of, you have to get yourself to Winchelsea, Victoria in the Autumn. It may have to go onto your calendar for next year – although the farm was still open at time of writing – but worth having on your radar.

So 41 years ago, Jenny Parish was given a box of dahlia tubers from an aunt to add some colour to their new house. She fell in love with these vibrant Mexican natives and needless to say, with a collection now at 20,000 bushes across 2.5 acres, this love has lasted a lifetime.

Originally she increased her collection for a fundraiser for the local school which still continues in the form of a Dahlia festival each year, even though the school has long closed.

Jenny and husband Arthur invite the public to view the incredible results of her blood sweat and tears every Autumn, including the festival at the end of March. Florists are also welcome to come and choose their exact colours.

One of the biggest thrills is being able to choose your colours straight from the field – like a painter with a huge colour palette.

An absolute labour of love for Jenny, it’s the look on people’s faces when they see the fields in full bloom that keep her going. “I still love when people visit the farm and see all the colour, the huge variety and the wow factor.”

It takes a special kind of person to be a flower farmer, and to dedicate her life to the one variety in the way she has. Our hats go off and off to Jenny and Arthur for bringing such beauty to the world.

Dahlias are originally from Mexico and if you’re into the ‘meaning’ of flowers – they are good to have around..

  • Staying graceful under pressure, especially in challenging situations
  • Drawing upon inner strength to succeed
  • Traveling and making a major life change in a positive way
  • Standing out from the crowd and following your own unique path
  • Staying kind despite being tested by certain life events
  • Finding a balance between adventure and relaxation
  • Commitment to another person or a certain ideal
  • Warning someone about a potential betrayal.
